CARAVAGGIO'S FRUIT BASKET

One of my favourite still lifes is Caravaggio’s “Fruit Basket” (1596), a subject he apparently painted frequently. He painted them for money and sold them in the streets. He said it is just as difficult to paint a good picture of fruit as it is a human figure. I am reminded of Magritte’s painting containing the phrase “Ceci n’est pas une pipe”. We should not be fooled that this painting is anything other than the joy of putting paint on canvas.
