There is nothing so loud as a deaf person’s silence. She is holding her hands, not communicating, challenging the world to enter her universe. This is a silent picture that speaks volumes. Perhaps she’s thinking “You people cannot imagine what I hear in my world”. I love this portrait. Carrie is not so sure. She is ‘framed’ several times, by the dark border and the chair. Her deafness has barriers like the borders that constrain her portrait.
