After the Spanish left Holland, the people rejected church and royalty. Artists ended up working for the guilds and commoners. Dutch still life became a vehicle for the display of personal wealth, as well as painting techniques in the 17th century. The middle class commissioned such paintings. This dahlia and the vase were gifts, both from my children. My wealth is thus displayed.
